World’s Tallest Christmas Tree

VALLEJO, CA - Standing at 125′ tall, the towering presence and iconic symbol of California’s biggest holiday celebration, Holiday in the Park at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, will be a gigantic Douglas fir - the biggest Christmas tree in the world! The tree is expected to arrive at the park on October 30 from a tree farm in Oregon, traveling first by truck on Route I-5 and finally, ceremoniously delivered via Chinook helicopter into the park. Park guests will be able to enjoy this exquisitely decorated and lighted tree when Holiday in the Park kicks off on Friday, November 23.
“Having the biggest tree in the world will make Holiday in the Park one of the most exciting and magical places to visit this holiday season,” said Martin Lathrop, park president. ‘If you can imagine the sheer size of this magnificent tree, and add to that the dazzling display of holiday themed areas all around the park, it really will be the biggest holiday celebration in all of California.’The Christmas tree, which has a trunk diameter of four feet and an expanse of branches up to 55 feet, will be placed in the existing Dolphin Fountain location, a centrally-located area which will allow guests to view the tree the moment they enter the park. Each night, guests will be asked to “search” for Santa Claus, whom once found, will light the Christmas tree and the actual park simultaneously unveiling millions of twinkling lights in an extraordinary visual display. The 125′ tree, transported from the Egan Acres Tree Farm/Willamette Evergreen Tree Farm in Salem, OR will be considered the tallest cut Christmas tree found this holiday season. To transport the tree to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, the park has enlisted the services of expert transport service Total Quality Logistics and Redmond Heavy Hauling of Portland. A 75′ tractor will be attached to an 18-wheeler and the truck will journey from Oregon to California on Interstate 5. Large banners will identify the special cargo as the biggest Christmas tree in the world, as the truck makes its way along 580-mile rural route, stopping at various towns before arriving at its final destination.

Future of the Podcast

Hey guys,

We’ve been seriously considering resurrecting the podcast for the site. As you know, we haven’t released a show in a while but would like to get rolling again. So our question to everyone is, what would you like to see in the future? Keep it a Discovery Kingdom podcast, do more audio shows, podcast from the park more often?

So let us know what you think we should do in the future for the podcast. Get in touch with us via email at dkradio@themeparkvillage.com.

Thanks for your help!

Fright Fest Is Here

Fright Fest is back at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom for the 2007 season! Two haunted houses, a street show, and a zombie zone make up this years event. Tinsel Town Terror is a returning maze for 2007 that features all the horror-ific characters from Hollywood movies. The other is Kamp Kaos, a new maze for this year that is located in the Monsoon Falls Lagoon.

Check back later as we begin our coverage of Fright Fest and Holiday in the Park. Be sure to visit our affiliate site, SM2Designs for 100 photos of Fright Fest!

Tony Hawk is Coming

Ah yes, once again a long absence since this site has seen an update. As September draws to a close, Six Flags prepares for their 2008 capital budget announcement. But the cat’s out of the bag, and Tony Hawk’s Big Spin is coming to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in 2008.

After investing millions of dollars in 2007, you’d think that Six Flags would try to keep with the new image. To me, skateboarding and Tony Hawk don’t really fit in with animals and sea creatures. While the spinning style roller coaster is a GREAT fit for the park, the theme is not.

Hopefully the park can make Tony Hawk’s Big Spin work well with the “Sky” section of the park. Only time will tell as the new coaster opens in spring 2008. Maybe Six Flags will shock the world and have a high quality coaster clone.

The official announcement is coming tomorrow, but here’s the page at their website.

Be sure to check back soon as we bring you more details on the new coaster for 2008 as well as Fright Fest coverage.

UPDATE:
Tony Hawk’s Big Spin has been officially announced. Read the official press release here.

It’s Official: Six Flags Now Owns Discovery Kingdom

It’s official, Six Flags now officially owns Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California. On July 31st, Six Flags paid a lump sum of $55 million dollars to the city of Vallejo. While many still claim that this sale will not affect the park, you still have to believe that Six Flags will be willing to invest more money into a park that they own.

Prior to the sale, the city and Six Flags had a revenue sharing agreement. While the city’s cut is expected to be substantially smaller, Vallejo is still expected to earn around $750,000 in park admission taxes per year. The sale of the park will also cut the city’s debt in half.

City Manager, Joe Tanner made a last ditch effort to exempt the elephants from the sale, but fell short. Attorneys advised Tanner that removing the elephants from the sale could cause many legal problems. Tanner was quoted as saying, “If you take elephants out of the deal, you just bought the elephants and you’d pay for the potential profit from those elephants to the park. How can I put the city in such harm’s way?”
